Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

How I found out about this book: HarperTeen sent an advanced reader copy to my (now former) workplace; I took one look at the cover and nabbed it!

My review: I read this book in one sitting. Or rather in one tossing, turning, nail-biting span of 8 hours during which I actually felt my heart--or something with wings--fluttering in my chest. While Clara took her sweet time growing on me, as soon as she clicked with a certain someone in the story, I was a goner. The captivating romance intertwines with angelic lore; the gradual revelation of mysterious dangers Clara's mother has been keeping from her will keep readers riveted throughout the book.

Who should read this book: If you're burned out on fallen angels as I know I was, last year, you may find this quite refreshing. I can't wait to read more of this series... too bad I'll have to wait until 2012!

  1. I thought is was really addictive but for some reason and I can't put my finger on it I didn't love it, I don't know! I would totally read the next installment because she better end up with Tucker, although I'm pretty sure she'll find a way of making us fall in love with Christian in the next on.

  2. @Alexandra... Team Tucker all the way, baby! I had really really low expectations (after reading so many fallen angel stories the last 2 years) and so this totally sucked me in. :)
